Joyland is a novel by American writer Stephen King, published in 2013 by Hard Case Crime. It is King's second book for the imprint, following The Colorado Kid (2005). The first edition was released only in paperback, with the cover art created by Robert McGinnis and Glen Orbik. A limited hardcover edition followed a week later. The novel was nominated for the 2014 Edgar Award for Best Paperback Original.

Background information

The novel was first mentioned in passing in Neil Gaiman's interview with Stephen King for The Sunday Times, published on April 8, 2012,and was officially announced on May 30, 2012.[5] The novel's cover art was revealed on September 20, 2012 by Entertainment Weekly.[6] In his interview on NPR's Fresh Air on May 28, 2013, King revealed that the novel grew from a single image he had had for 20 years of a boy in a wheelchair flying a Jesus kite on a beach.[7] King also notes that Canobie Lake Park, an amusement park in Salem, NH, was one of the main sources of inspiration for the novel.

Limited edition

On May 13, 2013, Titan Books, which publishes the Hard Case Crime line of books, announced the publication of a limited hardcover edition of Joyland, to be released on June 11, 2013, one week after the initial paperback publication of the novel. The book was published as three different editions: a gift edition, limited to 1,500 copies; a numbered edition, limited to 724 copies and signed by the author; and a lettered edition, limited to 26 copies and signed by the author. Each iteration features cover art by Robert McGinnis, different from the paperback edition, as well as a map of the Joyland amusement park, created by Susan Hunt Yule.

About Joyland

A STUNNING NEW NOVEL FROM ONE OF THE BEST-SELLING AUTHORS OF ALL TIME!

The #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever.

"I love crime, I love mysteries, and I love ghosts. That combo made Hard Case Crime the perfect venue for this book, which is one of my favorites. I also loved the paperbacks I grew up with as a kid, and for that reason, we're going to hold off on e-publishing this one for the time being. Joyland will be coming out in paperback, and folks who want to read it will have to buy the actual book." - Stephen King

Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Michael Kelly begins his rendition of King's engaging short novel sounding pleasantly satisfied, if wistful, with just a twinge of regret, precisely the mood of Devin Jones, the book's protagonist. Now in his 60s, Devin recalls the details of how he spent 1973, working as a Happy Helper at Joyland, a slightly seedy North Carolina amusement park where, several years before his arrival, a young girl was murdered on a ride called Horror House. Kelly follows King's lead in fashioning a proper voice for each and every character, creating a delightfully unpretentious and winning listening experience. With this performance, it seems as if Kelly is himself responding to the advice given to new carnival employees by the sweetly paternal Joyland director, Bradley Easterbrook:

Remember, the old man tells them, you're here to sell fun.

5 of 5 a signed copy of Stephen King's Joyland, June 15, 2016
Reviewer: Lynn from United States
I recently purchased a signed copy of Stephen King's Joyland, which was a limited edition hardcover copy in a custom slipcase.  I could not be happier with it!  It was in perfect condition, just as described.  This is my second purchase from Veryfinebooks.com, and it will certainly not be my last.  My first purchase was a signed limited edtion of Stephen King's The Stand, the coveted "Coffin Edition."  In working with the owner, Emmanuel, I must have asked dozens of questions as I had never purchased a signed book before.  Emmanuel was patient, answered all of my questions and concerns, and above all else was extraordinarily honest with me.  (I did additional research on my own.)  His followup was also exceptional.  Any concerns I had about purchasing an expensive rare edition disappeared.  When I saw that Joyland was available, I bought it without hesitation.  I wouldn't even consider doing business with someone else, particularly online.
