Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is the world's most notorious and widely-read Gothic novel. it has also been heralded as both the first modern horror novel and the first science fiction novel. More important that either is the novel's mythical status in society. The rich subtext of Frankenstein, and the vast number of readings in can inspire, have contributed to the novel's continued success after nearly 200 years.

This edition of Frankenstein uses Mary Shelley's definitive 1831 text and incorporates a new and excellent introductory essay on Frankenstein by Patrick McGrath, which discusses its rich symbolism and place in world literature. There is also Mary Shelley's introduction to the 1831 edition and Percy Shelley's original preface. This is the definitive edition of Frankenstein.

This edition also features the complete wood engravings by Lynd Ward. This is the finest reproduction they have seen since their original publication over 70 years ago, and it is also the first complete reproduction of the works since that time.
